Fabulous Children's Novels | David Walliams ♡

We took our Primary class up to Eden Court Theatre to see Billionaire Boy, a brilliant adaption of David Walliams hugely popular children book of the same name. Although for children, the show was equally as enjoyable for myself and the other staff members that were there.

Having not read any of David Williams books before (of which there are loads by the way) I decided to give a few a go. In one weekend I polished off The Boy In The Dress and Mr Stink, the first two novels he released in 2008/2009 and in the space of a week my collection of his books has gone from zero to five. I am so enjoying reading them, understanding why the kids I work with love them so much and feeling like a kid again myself.

Today I thought I would give you a wee review of the three I have read so far which is Mr Stink and The Boy In The Dress and Demon Dentist. I had heard people talk before about the beauty in the book The Boy in The Dress but never understood why, but now I know.

The Boy in the Dress follows the story of a young boy called Dennis. Dennis gets very sad and lonely at home as his mother left when he was little, his father works long hours and his brother prefers to be out with his friends. Although amazingly great at football, the schools star striker in fact, Dennis has a secret. He loves reading VOGUE and spends hours looking at the fashion, the style, the bright colours and the beautiful models. Its not until he receives detention and meets a girl called Lisa they realise they share the same passion for fashion. Lisa convinces Dennis to try on one of the dresses she has made and instantly Dennis finds that the adores wearing a dress, wearing makeup and heels, it makes him feel wonderful.

Mr Stink is Walliams second novel which again, is a joy to read. Chloe is a young, shy girl who becomes friends with the old tramp who sits on the local park bench day in day out. As Chloes mother runs from MP, one of her promises is to remove all homeless from the streets. Chloe takes it upon herself to regime Mr Stink, in her garden shed. A beautiful friendship blossoms between the two unlikely characters and they are able to help each other with their problems.
Mr Stink focuses on acceptance of other people, no matter their situation. It reminds us that on the surface someone may look a certain way but you should.d not treat them any differently, you don't know what their background is or how they have ended up where they are, a lesson I feel is very much needed in this modern day society. I think this book too is brilliant to open the eyes of younger children, let them understand these positive messages.

Demon Dentist is the final one Ive read for the moment, another hilarious book for children to sink their teeth into....see what I did there? This story follows Alfie, a young boy with quite possibly the worlds most terrible teeth. His father worked in the mines but due to illness and the closing of the mines, they are a very poor father and son duo, just getting by everyday with a cup of tea and leftover biscuits. When Winnie, the larger than life social worker comes into their life she starts to try and get Alfie to visit the dentist. As children leave a tooth under their pillow for the tooth fairy, they are left with horrible items such as dead spiders, live bats and hundreds of live earwigs. But what's leaving them there?  Alfie is fully aware that visiting the dentist is a terrible idea, but why?
This novel is one of Walliams most outrageous but children will LOVE! It shows the meaning of appreciating what you have and the endless love a parent can have for a child. Another heartwarmer.

These three Walliams novels are the ones I have read so far, all in the space of a few days! Its been great being able to talk to the kiddos at work about them and hear their favourite parts too.
I have two more on my bookshelf to read, Billionaire Boy and Ive just started The Ice Monster.
I shall let you know in an update soon how these were and Im more than sure ill be purchasing a few more to read now that I have a lot of time on my hands!

Hope you are all staying safe and well, stay home!

Just in tine for everyone spending months in their homes, Disney plus has arrived!

Vinyls Im Listening Too ♡

Well, crazy times guys. Im on my first week of complete isolation now that schools are shut and Im already going a bit stir crazy! Today I thought I would share with you some of the vinyls I've been reaching for in the past few days to keep me entertained. I can assure you, this is the first post of many like this one!

Im obsessed with vinyls and Im lucky enough to own alot of old school ones as my parents had an amazing record collectin when they were younger. I grew up  having a record playing at my grandparents house which I used to spend hours listening to and hunting through their record collection. Although I have some great oldies in my collection, I love buying vinyls instead of albums these days and I'm so glad I have my own wee collection building up which I will share with you over time.

Two Scottish legends first, Lewis Capaldi & Nina Nesbitt. Lewis' debut album Devinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent is an ear worm of an album. Im obsessed. I thought Capaldi was pretty good, then I saw him perform live at Belladrum and fell head over heals for not only his music, but his voice. This album is one of those that you can put on and listen to over and over again. His released singles are just the tip of the iceberg of gems on this album, the lyrics are so beautifully poetic and of course, listening on vinyl just makes the songs even more magical.

Nina Nesbitts album The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change is an incredible piece of work from another scottish legend. Ive been a fan of Nina since her EP The Apple Tree was released back in 2012. Her first album Peroxide was so good and myself and Bruce went to a few of her shows of hers back in the day. Her sound has developed into a more modern pop chilled vibe compared to the folk sound she used to gravitate towards. Colder is such a great track, my favourite on the album and again, made insanely good played on vinyl along with her ballad Is It Really Me Your Missing which Nina's voice is stunning in.

Another favourite of mine to put on is Taylor Swifts RED album. Of all her albums this is still my absolute favourite and I listen to it over and over. I love the mix on this album of proper pop hits but still having the country element in majority of the tracks. Begin Again is my favourite track of hers and listening to it on vinyl makes it sound so beautiful. The lyrics throughout the album are stunning, heartfelt and classic Taylor. You feel yourself totally relating to certain tracks and getting lost in the stories she tells. I have three of her albums on vinyl and can't wait to get some more.

Amy Winehouse is an idol of mine. Her voice, her songwriting, her style, I adored her. Amajor talent taken wy to soon from the world. I think out of all my records, Amy's voice is the most stunning played on vinyl.  It sounds like shes in the room with you, the rawness of the vocals are emphasised and all you can do is just sit and absorb it. Each of the tracks on this album are incredibly written and show a huge insight in to what she was going through and experiencing at the time.

Finally, a really recent one that I haven't stopped playing since I got it is Louis Tomlinson's debut album Walls. Louis was always been my favourite member of One Direction, I remember always wearing striped clothes and toms to match his style, anyone else? His solo sound is so good, its almost early 2000s to me with hints of Blur and Travis coming through, I love it.
His latest single Walls is just perfection and once again, hearing it on vinyl is my favourite.

Hope you enjoyed reading about some of my favourite vinyls at the moment. Let know what you guys have been listening too, we all have plenty of time right now don't we!
Keep safe everyone, the sooner we all stay in the sooner we can get back out.

Keeping You Entertained ♡

Well, what an interesting and unsure time to be alive! I hope everyone reading this is safe, well and not going too stir crazy if you are in isolation or quarantine.
In these strange times I have, like many others, decided I will try my best to create as much content as I can to keep people amused even if just for a few minutes everyday.

One way of doing this along with my blog is with my band, Blind Broken. We have decided to upload lots of our favourite covers as often as we can to our Blind Broken Youtube Channel and social medias to keep you all entertained. Having no gigs lined up now for the foreseeable future, we still want to be able to play and entertain in any way we can.

The first one we have shared is one of our favourites to perform, Black Horse & a Cherry Tree by the amazing KT Tunstall. We hope you enjoy and stay tuned for all the ones we have lined up over the next wee whiley.

Give us a wee follow to keep up to date with our videos:

Stay safe and try too stay happy everyone,
